About the Society of Catholic Social Scientists (SCSS)

Bringing credible scholarship and an evangelical spirit to political, social, and economic questions.

Who We Are

The Society of Catholic Social Scientists (SCSS) is a scholarly, interdisciplinary organization dedicated to promoting and conducting rigorous social scientific research within the parameters of orthodox Catholic doctrine.

Our Mission

The contemporary social sciences are primarily dependent on secular assumptions, concepts, and theories. Consequently, the role of faith and Catholic social teaching is hardly considered in today’s body of social science. The SCSS boldly challenges this secularized approach to the social sciences by combining objective scholarly analysis with fidelity to the Magisterium.

  • Fellowship with other serious Catholic scholars and thinkers.
  • Excellent, diverse social science scholarship grounded in the Catholic intellectual tradition.
  • Annual conferences focused on fellowship, serious academic dialogue, and furthering the Catholic intellectual tradition.

What We Do

The Society’s main projects are its annual conferences, held in October of each year; our academic journal, The Catholic Social Science Review; and its book series.

Conference

The SCSS sponsors various kinds of conferences, including our major, annual conference/meeting in October of each year; occasional spring conferences; and other special conferences and events.

Catholic Social Science Review

The Catholic Social Science Review is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal that publishes original articles and reviews in the social sciences and the humanities, with an editorial focus on topics relevant to the social teaching of the Catholic Church.

Book Series

The SCSS monograph series, How to Argue About Current Public and Cultural Questions, offers brief books featuring arguments from a Catholic social teaching and natural law standpoint.
